Eric: A brief Wii update, for *yooooou.*

WarioWare Smooth Moves is startlingly awesome.

I can't get the freaking glass-drinking thing, dagnabbit!

I grabbed that and Marvel Ultimate Alliance, on the theory that A) dude, Captain America, and B) I won't get Zelda until I can give my life to Zelda for a week, which isn't yet.

I did start playing Zelda: A Link To The Past, downloaded from the Virtual Console. It is just as cool as I remember. And highlights that one does not need state of the art graphics to have an amazingly cool game.

In other news -- dude. Burns needs Mii Parade fodder, yo. E-mail or comment to open dialogues to gets us some friends codes trading going.

Right, I don't comment often, but ... Got my Wii around Chirstmas and I still don't have any visitors to my Mii parade, so I would LOVE to be Wii-friends with you. My Wii code is 1273 1635 1096 8029.

Comment from: ANT Link [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at January 30, 2007 1:01 AM

Didn't feel comfortable posting my friend code in public, so I just sent it to you via e-mail. Glad to see you're enjoying your Wii. It is awesome, isn't it?

As for the glass-drinking game, the trick is to tip it up slowly so the drink doesn't spill out. You'll get it in no time ;)

My roommate and I marathoned Wario Ware so we could unlock the multiplayer mode.

That was an insanely fun two-in-the-morning. >_

Best quote, "Goddammit! I missed the ass slap!"

Comment from: Eric Burns [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at January 30, 2007 1:26 AM

Wait... MULTIPLAYER?

DUDE!

Comment from: admanb [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at January 30, 2007 1:35 AM

*grins*

Yeah. After you finish the single player mode, the train station can take you to multiplayer games. Basically it's the same mini-games, but with a variety of win/lose conditions. It's good fun, and it only requires one wiimote (for up to... 12 players? I think.)

Comment from: Eric Burns [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at January 30, 2007 1:41 AM

Is there... online multiplayer?

Comment from: ANT Link [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at January 30, 2007 1:53 AM

Sadly, there is not. No online multiplayer Wii games for a while yet. But that's okay in Warioware's case because half the fun, if not more, is of acting silly in front of your friends and seeing them do the same. Try it sometime and you'll see what I mean ;)

Long-time reader first-time poster... I think. First off, Websnark = killer. Second of all, my wife has made a bazillion miis so hook it up:

If you're downloading games, get "Super Metroid".

It's my favourite game ever, and I've been gaming since 1990. :D

Comment from: Merus [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at January 30, 2007 8:03 AM

Super Metroid is probably the greatest game ever made. It holds up startlingly well despite it being made 15 years ago, and does lots of clever things that the rest of the industry hasn't even cottoned onto.

It's also sort of cheap in places (not anywhere you need to go, mind), but I said it was maybe the best, not that it was perfect.

Comment from: 32_footsteps [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at January 30, 2007 8:28 AM

Best game ever? That's pretty individual. Though I guess it's worth noting that when we held a vote on it, Super Matroid made it to #2. #1 was Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which I certainly think was much better than Super Metroid.

As for online-capable games, Nintendo is still hammering out the online coding for games. They'll make sure all the games that are online-capable have the blue "Nintendo WiFi" emblem you see on several DS games now. The best guess I've seen is that the first online-capable game will be Super Smash Bros. Brawl and some third-party title where it'll be kind of tacked on (kind of like how it was rolled out on the DS with Mario Kart DS and Tony Hawk's Downhill).

Comment from: Sean Duggan [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at January 30, 2007 9:45 AM

^_^ Marvel Ultimate Alliance is fun, quite addictive. I've got the PC version. I've beat it once in two marathon 10-hour gaming sessions (I don't tend to beat games quickly. Combination of lack of l33t gaming skeelz and not really caring to finish quickly). The various powers are fun. Targetting is a little bit off and the Fin Fang Foom level is horribly bugged (every time I play it, my heroes try to run for the back of the level, which makes the section where you hve to fire forwrds towards FFF all the harder), but it's an enjoyable romp. I found myself constantly comparing it to Freedom Force, and finding massive faults, but I have since realized that the comparison is unfair. Freedom Force was a tactical superhero simulation. MUA is an arcade action game. *sigh* Now if only Irrational hadn't screwed up the power system in FFvt3R...

Actually, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is supposed to come out between April and June (so, uh, May), and it has been confirmed to have online multiplayer. So that will likely be the first Nintendo-made online game for the Wii, at least. (As for third-party online games, I'm betting it'll be the SSX game EA is making specially for the Wii.)

Anyway, my Wii code is 4096 7088 3423 0078. I only have 10 of the 100 friend slots filled up, so... yes, this will be useful.)

You won't be disappointed with Marvel:UA (unless they did something truly horrible to it on the Wii, which I doubt). We've played it through on X-Box and found it quite enjoyable (although the boss battles are often a bit annoying) and at some point will break it out to finish unlocking those last few costumes.

As for the new WarioWare, games like this are why you buy a Wii in the first place instead of a 360.

Please excuse the double-post, I received an error message the first try.

I bought Metroid Prime upon buying my Wii. What an amazing game. I am hugely looking forward to Prime 3 and online play... I have yet to finish Prime though, I got to the final boss and then Zelda came for christmas. There's not enough good things to say about Twilight Princess.

I am looking forward to WarioWare, disappointed to read though that there are no more four-player simaltaneous games. I do own the GameCube version however, so I can satisfy my need for multi-player Ware with that. Love the tipping turtle game.

I'm hoping for Wii Sports 2 in a year with a bit more depth, tighter boxing controls, and online play. I would love to have a worldwide ranking for all the games on Wii Sports. That would be hot.

Right now I wait patiently for Mario Galaxy, while my wife tonight made to the final world of the TG16 Bomberman '93. And now Link To The Past and Contra III are on the Virtual Console! That's exciting, I don't own either for my old SNES.

Cheers to you all, and belated congratulations to you Eric and Wednesday. Keep up the good work and good luck.

Man, A Link To The Past. That brings back a lot of musical memories. The Dark World theme still rocks socks. Still, doesn't compare to the music in Super Metroid. Meridia, eep.

Yep, I'm a game music nerd.

I'm still saving for my wii. As a chronically broke University student, it's kinda hard, but my family is helping by giving me gift certificates for a huge electronics retailer.

I'm so looking forward to Metroid Prime 3!

Comment from: Ryan Rogatschnigg [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at January 31, 2007 1:23 PM

...Thanks Dent! The correct code is: 1814 1218 5606 5238

Nice part about the Wii, Carina, is that you at least get a game with it for less than three-hundred dollars - and both golf and bowling are multi-player with just the one controller. And by the time you do buy one, extra controllers won't be as scarce as buffalo.

Comment from: 32_footsteps [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at January 31, 2007 2:59 PM

Oh, it occurs to me I should mention that due to my so-called N64 Rule (namely, don't buy a console until it has three games you want, named after what happened when I got the N64), I don't have a Wii yet.

However, that's about to run into the Wife Exception (I can get any video game-related item I want if my wife also wants it), as soon as my tax return is submitted. I'm pretty excited, mostly because this is the first non-karaoke game she's gotten excited for since... geez, probably Guilty Gear X^2.

Comment from: RandBrittain [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at January 31, 2007 3:49 PM

I'm at 1237 9933 3234 6568. I'm definitely looking forward to more online multiplayer for games like this.

My instinct with the Virtual Console is to not buy anything and hope the prices go down- right now they're sufficiently high as to discourage proper splurging- but no doubt I'll be WEAK in the end. It's a tragedy, really.

Comment from: 32_footsteps [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at January 31, 2007 4:32 PM

I wouldn't hold my breath on that. Nintendo has been quite happy with the VC sales thus far, and other than occasional event weekends (there may at some point be "half off VC games this weekend!" deals), VC titles aren't going to drop. In fact, Nintendo's actually playing around with charging a premium for certain VC titles (I forget which TurboGrafx game was the first to try this, but AAA list titles like Super Mario Bros. 3 or rare games like E.V.O. might also follow the same structure).

Comment from: Ryan Rogatschnigg [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at January 31, 2007 6:18 PM

I think it was R-Type for TG16 that was 800 points vs the standard 600 Wii points. That said, R-Type in Japan was released as two games, and we get both those games in one.

Link To The Past and Mario 64 have been standard prices for their respective systems, so thankfully whatever premiums they will charge don't simply apply to "the games people will totally want." It's cheaper than buying the really popular/rare games second-hand or off ebay so I'm cool. Or Bomberman 93 for five-player awesomeness, even if my wife has pretty much dominated it since I bought it. ;)

I hope for the ability to demo games in a later firmware update. There are games that I'd LIKE to try (Comix Zone, for instance) but I'm not going to spend the points hoping a game will be good. I'm mostly buying games I know are good and don't have/didn't actually own back in the day.

Good rule 32 footsteps. Right now the Wii doesn't have enough in the way of solid, deep one-player games. Zelda is about it. Going by that rule though, I really ought to buy a DS. There's at least a half-dozen games I would play and then some.

Comment from: 32_footsteps [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at January 31, 2007 11:09 PM

One catch with using that rule with the Wii is how to handle Virtual Console titles... I think a VC title should count towards the three if you don't have the original system... which means for me, TG-16 games would count.

The funny thing is, I actually don't count Zelda towards my 3 for the Wii. I've played the Wii version, and there's not enough there to make me take it over the GameCube version (and I already have a GC). So far, Raving Rabbids is the only one I feel the need to have, although Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be there and I have a good feeling about Super Mario Galaxy.

As for the DS... good call. Among other things, I can't think of a system that has been ever as encouraging to import for. Over half of my "want to buy" list is filled with DS games.

Something tells me we won't be seeing much activity on websnark for the next few weeks.

Comment from: Ryan Rogatschnigg [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at February 1, 2007 1:31 PM

I would agree that if you have a Gamecube, there's no need to wait for a Wii to play Twilight Princess. The control scheme is quite fun on the WIi but the only major difference in the game is 16x9 support. I've actually been buying used gamecube games (never did own the GC) like Metroid Prime and F-Zero and Wario Ware GC for cheap until the Wii library is better.

There are some great games out for Genesis and TG16. Gunstar Heroes, Bonk, Bomberman 93, Toejam & Earl. Still no Blazing Lasers for TG16 but there are some good top-down shooters.

If anybody wants to add me feel free, I've added everybody who's posted on this list.

Can Ecco 1&2 be downloaded?

Comment from: 32_footsteps [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at February 1, 2007 2:45 PM

Oh, I agree that there are alot of good Genesis games, some already on the VC. But I have a working Genesis, just like I have a working Super Nintendo. Genny games are a good reason for others to get the system - just not me.

Comment from: Akilika [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at February 1, 2007 7:23 PM

I've got Ecco 1, but I don't think 2 is available . . . at least yet. I could be wrong, though; I haven't checked in a week or two.

Dude! Tax Return! I hadn't even thought of that! I've been looking for a way to find some Wii money.

Comment from: 32_footsteps [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at February 1, 2007 10:27 PM

If you want to keep track of all the VC titles, here's the official Nintendo page with them all:

http://wii.nintendo.com/virtualconsole_en.jsp

Also, my tartan ephemeral friend, if that fails to get enough money, I recommend participating in business school studies. They generally amount to spending about two or three hours in a room, enacting some variant of the Prisoner's Dilemma, and getting paid for it. It's all the joy of furthering human understanding without getting injected with anything. The only catch is that they're only worth about $20-$40 a pop, so you'll need a few under your belt to get the cash.

Of course, the medical study route is much faster. And it's not nearly as scary as it sounds at first. I've made over $2000 in my life thanks to whoring my body for science, and I've done my part to find both a male birth-control pill and a possible hormone-based weight-loss method. I'm just a sleep study away from really striking it rich.

Comment from: kamagurka [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at February 2, 2007 10:11 AM

Man, the downward compatibility is really one of the most awesome things about the wii. I already bought four absolutely awesome GC games for less than 10 bucks a pop.
Eternal Darkness is truly one of the best games I have ever played.

Comment from: 32_footsteps [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at February 2, 2007 10:42 AM

Hmm... I wonder if I might need to write a piece on recommended "I missed this" titles for the GC that Wii owners can play now.

Let's see... in terms of ones off the top of my head, there's Beyond Good & Evil (also on PS2 and Xbox), Gotcha Force, Tales of Symphonia, and Odama.

Comment from: kellandros [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at February 2, 2007 10:52 AM

Business school studies are awesome. I only did two of them, but the second one they offered a payout based upon how well you did in their test stock market layout. They said you would get minimum $10, and average $25. I got $80 out of them(actually helped to clean out their budget, oops), even after ditching a decent chunk of virtual money.

My college also had some audiology tests; decent pay but my ears just aren't cut out for trying to identify melodies under various distortions.

--------
Gamecube titles: I'm still in the process of picking up ones to play. P.N.03 is decently fun if short, Geist I want to try out, Killer 7 just grabbed on clearance but haven't tried it out yet. And don't forget all the first party Nintendo standards.

Comment from: 32_footsteps [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at February 2, 2007 12:04 PM

I've gotten in enough flame wars over Killer 7 - anyone who wants my opinion on it can find it easily enough. PN03 is one of those games I would've recommended if it had more meat to it. As for Geist... that's a great concept that wasn't fully worked with.

Comment from: miyaa [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at February 2, 2007 1:04 PM

Alright, am I the only one a little worried that your Wii codes could be confused with someone's credit card number? Couldn't they at least include numbers or Japanese kanga with that?

Comment from: 32_footsteps [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at February 2, 2007 3:15 PM

Er, you mean kanji, right?

Anyhow, the friend codes are purely numeric because they wanted a system that could be global. Since Arabic numerals are the one symbol set with common global use, they restricted it to that.

For the number of digits used, they're doing it with 16 because it's a power of 2, and it's the same number of digits in a DS game's Friend Code. 8 would have been too few (particularly when you consider that each DS game has its own Friend Code... you'd run out rather quickly) and they determined that 32 was too many (as is, I sometimes think 16-character Friend Codes are too long).

I personally would have gone for 24-character alphanumeric codes like in the old password days of the NES. Of course, nearly everyone would be rooting to randomly get Justin Bailey as their friend code (except for people like me that'd hope either for Icarus Fights Medusa Angels or Danger !!!!!! Terror Horror).

Comment from: Paul Gadzikowski [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at February 2, 2007 4:07 PM

Kanga is the Japanese system of writing for bears of very little brain.

Business Studies sound kinda fun, if I lived closer to a college with a significant research program.

Comment from: 32_footsteps [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at February 2, 2007 10:05 PM

Couldn't hurt to ask around... even if there's a community college nearby with an associates-level business program, they might have studies to help the students learn about such things.
