Eric: Because reading can be so darn hard....

It's safe to say that things are very, very....

...they're very. I've had an interesting few weeks, and by interesting I mean busy, and by busy I mean oh my God. Plus recurrent and very painful gout. Plus my car was rearended. In a parking lot. For a pharmacy. Where I was getting medicine to treat my gout. Said meds are also not without side effects.

I am also drinking pure black cherry juice, which is supposed to help with the gout. Which depresses me, because black cherry juice is horrible. It's like drinking cherry flavored kero syrup.

But we do it. And we try to survive.

Now, one of the things I've been tasked to do at work is work out methodologies and techniques for curricular podcasting. Because... well, because I'm a geek, and that's what geeks do at schools. So I haven't had the time to write here, between everything, and exhaustion.

But, as part of my job, I have had to jump through the proper hoops to Podcast.

And so, I would like to direct you one and all to Websnark Annotations Podcast.

You knew it was coming. Admit it.

This first one is from me. Weds is kicking some ideas around, too, and we're also going to do some joint ones. Note that I'm being driven more by radio drama, radio humor, and This American Life than other things, so WAP's not going to be much of a news or commentary site.

How often will podcasts come out? I'm hoping for weekly, but to be honest, I'm so overworked right now I'll consider it a win if I reopen Garageband before the end of August.

The first episode, Long Drives and Match Games, is now up. You can also load feed://podcasts.websnark.com/?feed=rss2 into your podcastery reader... um... thingy... of choice and get new episodes as they come out. iTunes is coming, I'm sure.

I hope you like it.

I woke up one sleep-cycle early, and while noodling around on the computer gave the first six minutes a spin. Nicely done so far; the music tracks really complement your voice and cadences and enhance the experience.

(Oh my god, I sound pretentious. Well, what can I say, I'm fatigued.)

Might I suggest that you could do reviews of audio or video things that strike your fancy on your podcast, complete with sound clips? For instance, comic-strip-based TV specials...

Huh. I remember black cherry juice as being pretty thin and not bad at all. Are you sure you have *pure* stuff, or does it have corn syrup added? (I recall the supermarket had apricot nectar (when that was one of the few things I could stomach due to morning sickness), and *its* was awful. Couldn't drink it. Looked at the ingredients, saw corn syrup, and went back to the expensive stuff from Tuttle's.)

Good luck!

Well, actually, I was expecting it, eventually.

I am pleased.

Additionally, I agree--Black cherry juice is NASTY.

Hooray! One more thing to listen to while making comics!

Reading is hard when you're already drawing, and if you're not producing and consuming information simultaneously, you're wasting precious time!

Adding to your black cherry, did you read the latest Garfield strips? Jon & Liz the Vet declared their love & finally kissed. Aaaaaw, that's sweet, after 27 years of waiting.

Comment from: Paul Gadzikowski [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at July 28, 2006 10:46 AM

Clark and Lois still hold the record, I bet.

Went over there and listened. I think it's summer. I can't seem to get motivated on my new project, either.

Speaking of which, I'll eventually need to look into music. Where did you get your music? What format's it in?

Fine effort.

I just thought that Jim Davis and his team decided they finally did all the jokes they could do about being unable to get a date and are now working on making every lame joke about relationships. Another guaranteed 27 years of lame jokes right there.

Black cherry juice, eh? I suppose it depends on how much you like bitter flavors - I'd drink it. I'd have to be in the mood for it, but I'd go for it.

Comment from: Elizabeth McCoy [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at July 28, 2006 2:32 PM

Oh, Jon and Liz kissed years ago. He quit the stupid come-ons and said something that was actually sweet and honest, and she said, "You know, I'd like that."

There was one strip of that, one strip of him trying to keep Garfield from going, one strip of him taking Liz to the car ("You brought the cat." "That was one of the unmentionables."), and one strip of "That was a nice date" and they kiss, and Jon goes off clicking his heels and ya-ta-taing! while Garfield said something like, "Human love. It's so glandular."

Having read the series, though, wow, that's more plot-filled -- for Garfield -- than most of his dates and vacations! Cool! (And really, that was a rather sweet little sequence. I'll be impressed if they keep it up instead of ignoring it like they did the *last* time Jon and Liz kissed.)

What is "iTunes is coming, I'm sure." supposed to mean?

Comment from: Eric Burns [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at July 28, 2006 9:33 PM

It means click here to subscribe to the podcast via iTunes.

Told you it was coming. ;)

The series was somewhat poorly executed, but reading it, I had to admit that Davis has some great artists on board- you just don't notice it when they spend 90% of their time drawing the same characters. And I was disappointed they weren't able to get more jokes out of Jon's original date, where Ellen, the woman he's been asking out for years, hit her head and suffered amnesia, and finally went out on a date with Jon because she'd forgotten who he was. They had like two jokes about a situation that could hold a lot more, but I guess that they were eager to get to the part where Jon saw Liz with another date. I don't know. I would have liked the storyline better if at any point in the recent past, the writers had given Liz a single reason to like John. Still, it seems like some mainstream comics are becoming a bit more ambitious. Did anyone notice that Dilbert had a month-long storyline back in June? And it was a great mix of new and old Dilbert. There were still jokes about the office space, like Dilbert getting sued by his company because he had an idea he didn't give them, but before you know it, Dogbert is selling people "beachfront real estate" on a garbage barge, and Google executives are trying to firebomb Dilbert's house with satellites. The creativity of Dilbert's storyline compared to the sitcomness of Garfield's shows, in a nutshell, why I like Dilbert so much more.

Ah. I was confused because I just subscribed manually through iTunes and was rather confused... I was thinking... but it already goes through iTunes...

I should mention that you reading a) Fantasy novels, b) children's bedtime stories and c) erotica would be awesome (I'm kidding about the erotica, although it would sound funny) I was a bit surprised by your voice (I always imagined you sounding a little more bearlike and not so cuddly) but in all honesty it's quite nice to listen to.

Comment from: quiller [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at July 29, 2006 2:33 AM

OK, that was pretty disturbing, but you know it sounded pretty much like one of your essays, and you probably had to do a lot less typing to do it. I am amused with the red Explicit box that goes with it in my iTunes. You and 2 Live Crew, dude. In any case, you are now there below the Onion Radio News, Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me and Left, Right and Center.

You have an interesting delivery. It reminds me of Sandra Tsing Loh's. (You may have heard her on an LA-area NPR station or occasionally on Marketplace).

Comment from: larksilver [TypeKey Profile Page] posted at July 30, 2006 12:51 PM

Hearing the essay, with music included, rather than reading it, was an interesting experience. Very cool, dude.

I too create worlds when I drive, which I seldom do anything with when I get them home again. Somehow the fact that I am not doing anything with all this inspiration makes me so very tired. I don't understand how it got this way, but there it is.

But: Dude. And awesome.

Hey, Eric, Ira Glass called. He wants his sound track back and his kvetching back.

If Pat Sajak, Vanna White and Alex Trebek aren't the luckest people working in television these days, I don't know who is.

And I have it on very good authority that a lot of time, "Match Game" was broadcasted while the host and guest stars were drunk on (blank).

See, that's what I thought too. But my mother said I was totally ripping off Garrison Keillor, because I worked from an outline instead of a script.

Which, you know, is true enough.
