Eric: ....

Weds and I are going to be at Arisia, doing various panels, along with other folks. I'll let you know more soon.

I just learned the name of one of the panels I'm not on:

The Cerebus Syndrome: Can Funny Comics Become Serious?

...the panel description even credits me for coining the term, but I'm not actually on the panel?

Huuuuuuurm.

EDIT: I'm on it now. ;)

This is easily explained: how awkward would it really be for you to be on that panel? Think about it, first, you get to bignote yourself for coming up with a relatively obscurely derived term, and there's just gotta be someone at the panel that'll think it's garbage. Then, you get to argue semantics with people, further cementing the appearance that you're Mr. Bigshot Blogger, and I doubt that's the image you want out there.

Uh, I'm not so sure Arisia's program is that well...er..thought out, yet. I am familiar with the relaxed and just-in-time nature of much Con organizing, but not to have a program published online two weeks before the event seems to me to be pushing it a mite.

Eric, I suspect they'll put you on the panel. Especially if you point out the omission. If not, I encourage you to sit in the audience and snipe mercilessly, creating the opportunity for one of those "what do you know about Cerebus syndrome?" moments so beloved of conference attendees.

"Why, that question is so simple my chauffeur could answer it!"

Comment from: Eric Burns posted at January 2, 2006 4:12 AM

Yeah, they already rectified it. ;)

Comment from: William_G posted at January 2, 2006 7:45 AM

Oh, the spittle will be flying far and wide at that webcomics criticism panel...

Comment from: William_G posted at January 2, 2006 7:48 AM

By the way, if I get mentioned, I'll be suing for royalties

Comment from: Abby L. posted at January 2, 2006 9:30 AM

The REAL question is whether or not a serious comic can successfully become FUNNY. YOU GOTTA WONDER, EH?

...I got nothin.

Comment from: William_G posted at January 2, 2006 9:53 AM

I laugh at many serious webcomics every day. Mine included.

I really don't have the time to go to Arisia. I've got enough to worry bout with the con I'm staffing. On top of that, Vericon is just a couple weeks after, and I always love attending that.

Still, good luck on the panel. Later on this year, I'm going to do my first panel, so I'll be thrown to the wolves.

Comment from: wingie posted at January 2, 2006 12:59 PM

Oh wow, Websnark AND Wednesday White?! I think my want to attend Arisia has just became a need!

Comment from: Eric Burns posted at January 2, 2006 1:02 PM

Websnark includes Wednesday White. More properly, all of Websnark will be there.

With bells on. ;)

Comment from: Alexander Danner posted at January 2, 2006 1:23 PM

Yeah, when I saw you weren't on that panel, I assumed it was either a mistake, or for some reason you just didn't want to be on that one. Overcomittment would have been my guess. At any rate, I look forward to seeing you there -- and I'm hoping we'll have more opportunity to talk in person than we did last year!

Comment from: Ford Dent posted at January 2, 2006 1:37 PM

Bells on, eh?

Man, I need to get a better method of transportation than uh..

Walking.

Comment from: jjacques posted at January 2, 2006 1:53 PM

So apparently I'm moderating that panel?

My "moderating skills" will primarily consist of forcing audience members to fight for my amusement.

Comment from: Eric Burns posted at January 2, 2006 1:55 PM

Bring the "Star Trek fight music!"

Comment from: Dave Van Domelen posted at January 2, 2006 2:39 PM

Who gets the lirpa?

Comment from: Alexander Danner posted at January 2, 2006 3:12 PM

"So apparently I'm moderating that panel?"

Yeah, I'm listed as a moderator on one of them too, but I don't know how that happened.

Comment from: Wednesday White posted at January 2, 2006 7:15 PM

Christ, I'm a moderator on one of them.

Fun as it'll be to dom Eric in public, it would be on the one panel where my response to the question is, "gee, that's a rubbish dichotomy. I'm going shopping!"

Comment from: Thomas Blight posted at January 2, 2006 8:48 PM

More properly, all of Websnark will be there.

Does that mean your cat will be present as well, Eric?

And good luck finding a tank for 4,000 miles of ocean.

O.o;

Comment from: Robert Hutchinson posted at January 2, 2006 10:33 PM

jeph: It's a pretty late announcement. Promotion, etc.

Comment from: LurkerWithout posted at January 3, 2006 2:48 AM

Well there's no mention of what the other 2 dimensions of the 4k of ocean are. So if those are small enough you wouldn't really need that big a tank I'd guess...

Comment from: larksilver posted at January 3, 2006 3:13 PM

Perhaps you could borrow the sound stage they're using in the new Poseidon Adventure remake. Apparently, they built a tank to hold some 1.3 million gallons of water, all so they could have a "life-sized" version of the ship overturn in it. whew.
