Eric: Tis the Reason for the Seasoning!
(From Kismetropolis! Click on the thumbnail for his noodly appendage!)
There is something extremely cool about Christmas with your nieces, at their house. My sister's family has the largest Christmas tree on Earth. (I'm relatively sure it's larger than Rockefeller Center. Not the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, mind -- Rockefeller Center), and there had to be sufficient presents to fill that tree. With several nieces and the like, we managed to pull that off. My choices for all and sundry were well received. I have socks. Life is good.
The picture is from artiste extraordinaire Indigo Skynet's Kismetropolis, and somehow it conveys the essence of the holiday to me. It's a chance to cut loose and just be happy. "Joy to the World," the song commands, and I'm entirely behind that.
Plus, that's a darn good Flying Spaghetti Monster. I think plush FSMs should be available nation wide.
One would also look good on this huge, huge tree.
Otherwise, we are being festive. I received an illustrated copy of the Elements of Style which I am enjoying going through. (I consider it the illuminated copy.) There was coffee and tea, and soon the Christmas Brunch Quiche will be made (we all have our traditions, and this one is ours). There are Carols being duly whistled, and sugar free candies duly consumed (as it turns out, sugar free peppermint patties taste just like pepperment patties. Who knew?
Life is good. Merry Christmas. Dude.

Life is indeed good. I received Firefly and Serenity. Positively the bees knees!

I got the honking huge Buffy collection. I need some sort of back brace to lift it. Life IS good. Merry Joss Whedon-mas to all, and to all... More DVDs!

We got ourselves Serenity. Speaking of which, we readers were quasi-promised discussion of Serenity (or, at least, permission not to avoid spoilers) here at Websnark once half the management had got off his ass and watched the tv series DVDs so he could see the movie. Did that ever happen? Discuss or not as you like, you don't need to be told that, but do watch the stuff cuz it's good stuff.

Serenity on DVD isn't gracing UK shores until the end of February, which makes me a sad panda. I downloaded it because I am bad and naughty and probably a terrorist. Don't worry, I'll buy it when it's out.
Xeres: I got the same thing :D Now, to gather some friends, some snacks and some cheap speed and have one hell of a marathon.
I like italics.

This? Right here? Giggle city.
Since we're telling tales of plunder here, I got a new leather jacket and a soft snuggly throw. My son cleaned up, of course. Between Thomas the Tank Engine and Spider-man, I've done more than my part to Support Your Favorite Brand Name this year.
Joy o'the day to all.

So far? I got nothing. Seriously, nothing.
Part of this is because my wife and I decided that in lieu of presents, we'd split a new stereo system as a gift for ourselves, and we'd buy it during the post-Christmas sales. And part of this is because my entire family is a) at least 300 miles from me and b) terrible about doing anything timely.
I don't think this trend is going to hold up indefinitely. Still, I've got nuffin'. No joke.

Yes, Christmas and quiche go well together -- I spent Christmas Eve with friends (some of whom I hadn't seen in years) celebrating with quiche, eggnog, rum and anime (the new Appleseed, to be more specific).
The bacon, spinach and cheese quiche was simply amazing -- though the others (there were 6, I think) were damn tasty too.
So -- good choice of traditions! If the wife (who was visiting her family on Christmas Eve and got back early in the morning) can be convinced, it's one we might adopt on an ongoing basis.

We've had our own little Christmas Miracle here... Four kids and two parents have all been be-gifted, and all are happy -- no fighting, no whining, no "but I wanted a [whatever]."
Total outlay: $100.00.
Sure, we had some help from Grandma and Grandpa, and a few nice gifts came from friends, but mostly it was Sandra's work, dredging garage sales for Christmas bargains during July and August. Oh, and hand-making a set of plush dragons for the kids, and sending photo albums and videos to the extended family.
I hate having to be cheap, but I love being good at it.

Didn't get much this year from others. But I got an awful lot of stuff for myself, as a bunch of things I wanted hit stores last week. :) So I've been busy opening stuff anyway.
I am now tempted to try to make a FSM.

Well, lessee... I got a wireless network card for my laptop, a speaker-thing for my iPod, some nice books, Jesus Christ Superstar, and a wooden plaque that says, "Beyond this place, there be dragons." Got to see my brother, my grandparents, and my aunt and uncle. All in all, a copacetic holiday.

Heh. I got clothes. Lots and lots of clothes. Droping 12 inches on the pants size and from L to S on shirts can really empty the wardrobe. If my fam and friends had enough money to get me that AND Serenity or a sound card, I'd be truly blessed. Grandma also dropped me a check that made up for the absolute splurgathon I did in gifts to give (fortunately).
Now if only some of those gifts were things you could spend time on. I may have wanted clothes more than DVDs, but you can only wear one new outfit in a day, and it really doesn't take up much time.
Oh, and SeanH, definately!

These people right here? Can we give them another trophy biscuit for this? That's damn good parenting, if'n ya ask me. You didn't, but what's the point of a comments system if you can't give unsolicited opinions?
Oh, yeah..I got socks. Which is fine by me.

Monsters, Inc. And a big fluffy blanket. And a ton of other stuff. And midnight church last night and all day at my parents' and other than the dogs fighting (my terrier doesn't like their spaniel), peace and quiet and everyone getting along and lots of muppets.
And now, a very happy naptime.

I am now the proud owner of the ESTEBAN [sic accent, I can never work those out on PCs] COMPLETE GUITAR COURSE FOR BEGINNERS. Authored and fully endorsed by ESTEBAN.
...don't much know who he is, actually, but it's fun to say! Come on! ESTEBAN! (and maybe a quick mariachi riff here. dudda-dudda-DUN!)
Also, the requisite Fender Squier acoustic starter set, which I got two days ago at the extended-family gathering. Good stuff. You may all now take note that you knew me before I was famous/sold out/in rehab.
Best Christmassy things already happened earlier in the week with the S.O., though. I got him a cell phone (nothing terribly fancy, but I loaded it with ringtones and contacts and stuff before I gave it to him) and he got me a DS with Animal Crossing, among other things. (I'll be acquiring Mario Kart in the next day or two from my brother, and then the fun REALLY starts.)
I also got socks, a jacket that doesn't quite fit, and Hello Kitty PEZ. Hoorah.
Have a Merry, y'all.

I got the Batman: The Animated Series vol. 1 box set, a copy of Trask's Dictionary of Grammatical Terms in Linguistics, Will Eisner's Shop Talk (unfortunately, my mom didn't realize I already have a copy. She'll be replacing it with a new bookcase, which I desperately need as half of my books are piled on the floor.), a small book of haiku, a bottle of Lustau rare cream sherry (not the type I've had before that I really like, but they don't actually seem to sell that anymore), a new pair of slippers, and some new polo shirts. And of course a bunch of little things in my stocking.
Although the best gift was that the presents I got for my parents, which I wasn't too sure about, turned out to be hits. That feels mighty good.

Esteban is the Blank Label Comics Podcast intern. Duh.
Re: Narbonic: I keep forgetting that not everyone reads Narbonic's forum. That particular bit of information has been out for over a year now, IIRC.

I got socks too! Yay! Finally, the single hole in my wardrobe of black clothing has been filled.
And I got my mom Apples To Apples, and the family loves it. That made my day.
Happy Christmas, everyone.

My brother got the same illustrated elements. I had to settle for some Chinese novels, 'cause I'm the family heretic, having recently converted to systemic function grammars in lieu of style-guides of any sort.
Best gift: my brother's homemade soundtrack for my game design in progress. mmm...

Oooh, Trask. I loved his Historical Linguistics so much I gave it to two people for Christmas last year. Both of them liked it, too.

I got a Wacom wannabe! It's a refurbished Aiptek Hyperpen 8000U, which is actually very good, and less than a third of the price of the respective Wacom (the 8x6 Graphire). Well, might as well learn how to draw.
Oh, and my brother got me a talking Simpsons clock. It is cool.
Also, CHOCOLATE

My mom and son ganged up on me today. They're leaving for her home in Arkansas for a couple of weeks. It's great that he wants to get to know me mum, it is. But damn, I'm going to miss the little fellow. So, one part of me is kind of pouty, and I keep looking for the chatterbox in my too-quiet house.
On the other hand... wooohooooooo lots of smoochieface with no "are you sure the kiddo is still asleep?" Plus lots of EQII and plenty of time to get the rest of the new house unpacked.
I'd rather have my brat-boy, but for two weeks we get to pretend we're childless. That's... oh, wait, that's how we *got* a child. Must.. be.. careful. *giggle*
Bah. babbling is fun. Happy Boxing Day, y'all.

Joshua: I'm already bouncing around from cross-reference to cross-reference. Soon I will understand linguistics completely!

Let's see...I have clothes, which my parents complain every year about because clothes gets more expensive to buy for me each year. And I have an electric skillet because I asked for it and my stove at home stucks. I gave my parents some business stuff and a thermos and traveling mug (all with the logo of my college alma mater). And a 20 oz container of "crisp citrus herb anti-bacterial moisturizing hand soap with Green Tea Extract and Shea Butter" from Bath & Body Works. Which is the only gift I got from the extended family since we like to do the random exchange present thing. And it's probably the best present I got this year.

My mom shopped straight off the top of my Amazon wish list, so I got the items I most recently added, including Ducktales (a-woo-oo!) and Chef on DVD. The other great thing I got (aside from my Two Lumps plushies, of course) was a Tinker Bell winter set from my sister, which is wonderfully adorable. Oh, and my boss got me a Disneyland gift card which I can't decide how to spend. And my dad gave me cash, which is always, always a good thing.
