Eric: Hour 22...
...and the telethon has raised over $17,000. That's just staggeringly cool. Hand in hand with it we have the Adult Webcomics Telethon (not safe for work -- I mean, duh) which covers the comics that wouldn't otherwise fit into the generally SFW telethon. (They haven't racked up -- huh huh huh, he said rack -- the donation numbers that the other telethon has, but there are ways in which I see the two as two sides of the same coin. A person might not be able to make two donations, after all... but that doesn't mean that more adult-oriented webcartoonists shouldn't be able to pitch in without feeling they have to conform to a family standard.)
I'd kind of like to see the more... direct artists contribute pieces to the AWT as well. I know one or two artists, feeling outrage about Katrina in some way that can't really be "safe for work", who would probably broaden it. (Though I suppose people heading over there might not expect to see, say, Fetus-X among the strips. On the other hand, that might be a good reason to include it.)
In any case, people rock. They really do.

People definitely do rock.
I'm surprised at the numbers... and then surprised at myself for being surprised. After all, the Save ConnectiCon fund went up fairly quickly. Why not this one?

Wow, I just got home from work and the pledges have quadrupled since I last took a gander. My faith in humanity is somewhat restored. ;)

My favorite part so far has been reading that one animated banner strip accusing Democrats of being inclined to blame the president for anything bad that ever happens up to and including hurricane response, and then immediately checking the news and seeing that Bush had just come out and admitted that he had fucked up on the hurricane response.

I donated cash, bought two original Narbonics ("Shouting won't make pants appear" is now mine!), and will probably buy the book. I've actually been a little stingier with other drives because I've been intending to participate with this one. It seems that so many comics were submitted that even putting up one every twenty minutes, they still have to go into a third day. This project just rocks so hardcore, and I've never been prouder of our community.

I'm pondering contributing to the Adult telethon as well. Being, you know, an adult.
For anyone else in the same boat - or on the same train of thought - I'll repeat what Kris said in the comments on the previous snark, that they'll be accepting contributions till the 21st.

I tossed 5$ into the Adult Webcomics Telethon's donation bin. You know, for good measure.

Eric: Thanks, THANKS for the shoutout. The AWT needs more comics, we need more stuff to sell either at auction or as donation promos, but more than anything else we need MORE EXPOSURE.
(insert joke about porn needing more exposure here)
(insert insertion joke here)
Seriously, the more people who come to the AWT, the more money the Red Cross gets, one way or another. If y'all can do so, please link to us. (I understand if you can't- even a link to a porn site can cause trouble for an all-ages site, and that's why the AWT exists separate of the big Telethon in the first place- but if you can, please do. And use the banners, cruddy as they are! Peach-fleshtone draws attention!)
Fetus X isn't on my read list, but I heard about them and directly invited them to send something in. The answer I've got is a definite maybe.
PaulG: Donating money or a comic? Either is good, and both would be great, but if the choice were one or the other I'd rather the ARC got the dough.
Dorkboy: Thanks. To date you're the first person to tell us how much you were giving. I hope you went right away to the ARC website and paid your pledge!
One reason the AWT numbers are so low is that I honestly didn't consider keeping track of how much direct donations our Telethon raised. Without an electronic payment system or even the simple form code Blank Label is using for the big boy, all I could do would be to ask people to email me telling me how much they're going to give... or else just wait for checks made out to "American Red Cross" to arrive in the mailbox out by the highway and pull out my buddy Cal Q. Later.
A lot of the response I've got is from WLP regular customers and readers, mostly to say they've already donated to the Red Cross. One long-time WLP supported donated half his paycheck!! (Of course, that was before the telethon, so we can't claim credit for that even if we knew how much said paycheck was...)

This is terrific! I'm so happy to see everyone coming together this way. I would donate to the telethons.. and may yet, come Thursday's paycheck. Of course, I've also got the stuff to donate here for the Reliant City folks too, so I rock. riiiiiight.
Anyway.. here's my question: are telephones or televisions involved at all in these telethons? cause, y'know, shouldn't they be webathons? or somesuch? Silly, hair-splitting minds wanna know.
Look! It's a Lark what hasn't slept in two days! who needs drugs?

I only WISH this one had been submitted to the AWT.
And I was wondering when, and who, re: this gag.
Comment from: Zaq posted at September 14, 2005 5:31 PM
The number's over $21,000 now, and given the lag time, it'll be more quite shortly... and I definitely feel good about the fact that I helped raise that amount, if only a tiny bit (Being a college student sucks in many ways...). I mean, twenty-one thousand. I know a huge chunk of fully employed people who earn less than that every year. And it's only been up a day. This is definitely a noteworthy achievement.

Go to the telethon. Look at the menu on the right. Under animations, click Ryan Estrada.
Just make sure you have the funds available to cover the donation you will feel overwhelmingly compelled to make when you're done.
(I made it through all the strips posted so far with some detachment. Estrada broke me)
Comment from: Kris@WLP posted at September 14, 2005 9:03 PM
Ryan Estrada- er, I mean Welton Colbert- also did a strip for the Adult Webcomics Telethon. It's up, go look. Not so emotionally eviscerating as the animation you mention, but quite funny.
Oh, and I screwed up my schedule- I go to Dallas NEXT weekend, not this one. Which means I have to be even more of a pest than before because I have four more days to find updates for, rather than four days to build up a buffer for Mon-Wed. for the Telethon...
Comment from: siwangmu posted at September 14, 2005 9:04 PM
Have to append: still do what I just said, only then also click the one under it. I promise, if you follow these simple instructions you will achieve enlightenment.
(I don't want to describe why this is awesome because I want people to experience it whole, but... go!)
(Also, now that I've donated, I can't seem to stop refreshing the telethon page repeatedly while I wait for the total to change)
Comment from: siwangmu posted at September 14, 2005 9:08 PM
Aw, man, inadvertent comment spam, sorry, all. But I hadn't seen Kris' comment and the piece on the adult telethon (and man is it weird that that just went up when I only just... yeah), so wanted to say
thanks for the heads-up! That is awesome.
Those were the days!
Comment from: siwangmu posted at September 14, 2005 9:17 PM
dangit, I'm really sorry about this, but I can't find a "e-mail us if there's a problem" link on the Adult Webcomic Telethon page, so I'm really hoping this'll get seen instead: the "Next Comic" link on the comic8 page leads to the "oops, no more" page instead of the next comic--I only realized there were more by going to see the Estrada and clicking back from there.
Comment from: Kris@WLP posted at September 15, 2005 1:01 AM
Try it now. It worked fine here, but I double-checked the links anyway. (And it might explain why strips 9-12 had such low counters...)
I've also put a jump-to set of links on http://www.wlpcomics.com/telethon/comics.html . Hope that helps!

I only WISH this one had been submitted to the AWT.No, because that would have telegraphed the punchline.
