Eric: Drawing against the darkness.
The Webcomic Hurricane Relief Telethon has begun. Every twenty minutes, for the next two days, there will be a new comic strip. Some will be funny, some poignant. Some related, some unrelated.
Gossamer Commons has a strip contributed. So does Greg Holkan's Nemesis. Webcomics superstars and virtual unknowns alike have contributed.
I was unhappy to see they don't take Paypal, though having heard of some folks having problems with Paypal since Katrina, I guess I can understand why. I've contributed to the ARC already since Katrina, but I'm putting more money in tomorrow, after I get up. In the meantime, drink deeply. This is an event. Three comics an hour for forty-eight hours. Our community should be proud of that.
Let's make them prouder still, by opening our wallets and our hearts.

We would have liked to use Paypal, but after hearing about Something Awful and other sites' problems, it wasn't worth it. At least this way the money gets straight there with no interruptions.
We've been live for over two hours and we're above $1500 by now. The webcomics community is amazing.

This event is incredible. Thanks to the folks at BlankLabel for putting this together. Really. Kudos to all involved.
The beauty of something like this is being exposed to comics I otherwise would have overlooked. Plug: I've posted my entry, so be on the look out for The PC Weenies. :)
It's sad that tragedy has to be the impetus for such an event. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by the hurricane.

Mine's up right nooowwwwww! yee! I just woke up to check it and by the time I navigated through all the other ones mine was on the front page. Woo!
Virtual unknowns represent!

Mine's third, so my guess is they're going up in order received.
There's going to be a book too (of which you ought to have received notice by now if you're a participating artist), so keep your eye on the site even after the event's over.

This is astounding, this event...and it's only just begun. Maybe this could lead to a little bit more community building for cartoonists while it helps with community rebuilding in the Gulf? Ripples and such...

I'm beginning to think the donation counter may be broken. It seriously hasn't moved in over 6 hours and I find it hard to believe that there hasn't been at least a fiver given in that time.

Given my past problems with Paypal, and how they always skim money off of each transaction, I'm personally glad to donate directly instead of having Paypal take their pound of flesh from my donation.

sinless -- I've contributed $25 that didn't increment on the counter.

*sigh* I'm of two minds about this. One is that it's comicking news and should be tangented. The second is that some people have had it about Katrina and everything that's happened. Everywhere they turn they see more Katrina. So... by not mentioning it, I give them a refuge.
I probably won't mention it on Tangents, if only because people just have to take a look anywhere on the webcomicking world to see this mentioned. I'm sure the people who visit my site undoubtedly go to other sites that have this mentioned.

Yeah, I hate it when people keep talking about national tragedies in which hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced and there's a chance thousands are dead. Especially when people are trying to do something to help...they're just looking for attention. Let's ignore things and move on, shall we?

Yeah. What we wanted connected to unremitting charity work was an argument.
C'mon guys. Let's leave this topic as a positive, okay?
Comment from: Brandon J. Carr posted at September 13, 2005 1:51 PM
Sorry, Eric. I was going to leave it at that, I promise. I just think it's amazing that a couple hundred cartoonists of varying levels have come together for a good cause.
I'll turn off my jerk mode :)

Very cool all around. :)

My favourite so far has been the entry from Elf 'N Troll. It was wonderfully warm-hearted.

"sinless -- I've contributed $25 that didn't increment on the counter."
The counter doesn't jump up instantly. The pledge is stored until someone can review the numbers if something looks fishy and update the toteboard manually. (This is to avoid people going "hey, I just put in $10, and it went up by $10! I'll just keep hitting the button and artificially inflate the total!")
That said, I have just updated the total and I'm floored.

Kristofer -- it's still coming up $2,230 for me.
Comment from: Paul Gadzikowski posted at September 13, 2005 3:41 PM
I see over $10,000.

Kristofer- Originally, since I couldn't take any electronic payments either, I wasn't going to track pledges. Seeing y'all's (much bigger) telethon inspired me to at least put an email link in to -try- to track pledges. (Sadly, I don't have coding skills to make a form like you use.)
As for the Adult Webcomics Telethon (for those comics whose material is a bit much for the main one), there have been a lot of obstacles, but little by little things are moving forward.

Red Cross, we're going to raise money for you whether you like it or not...

My personal favorite is 1037 from www.tankhat.com, with giant dinosaur power. Of course, that's just because I keep picturing Eric as the giant dinosaur.
(Which of course makes Katrina Eric's fault, since he could have used his giant dinosaur powers to save New Orleans).
((Hopefully I don't have to point out that I'm not serious))

I think the first comic from Brad Guigar was brilliant. Especially the last panel. It'll be really interesting to see how much money this generates.
Comment from: SeanH posted at September 13, 2005 7:55 PM
It's a shame I didn't find out about this until they stopped accepting submissions, or I'd've made something. I always drop the ball on this kind of thing.
Comment from: Kris@WLP posted at September 13, 2005 8:03 PM
SeanH: For what little it's worth, the Adult Webcomics Telethon is still accepting submissions, and will do until a week from tomorrow, due to various real world obstacles and belated response from some artists.
That may not work for you, but I assure you it'd be a rare comic we'd turn away...

Dude, Shaenon Garrity is selling ALL her original daily artwork from Narbonic for $20 a strip, with all proceeds going to hurricane relief. I'm going to have to be stopped from buying a dozen.
Comment from: Kris@WLP posted at September 13, 2005 8:49 PM
Wow. I have the original-art-hoarding bug so bad, the one piece of art I pulled from my files to sell felt like ripping my own left lung out.
Shaenon is WAY stronger than me here.
(What? No, it's not art I drew. I want people to buy and enjoy it, not pay for the privilege of applying charcoal starter and a match...)
