Eric: This is what happens when you tweak things while whistling shreds your sanity
Right. I managed to kill the main index template. We have a default up top, and I'm going to bed. I'll fix it in the morning. Snarky will return soon, I swear.
EDIT: Okay. I couldn't rest without fixing some of the stuff. So, Snarky's back. The About Section and Trawls are back. The Categories... well, work again (and there's a list of how many entries each category has, next to them. Because we can). Under them, you'll find the new "Recent Comments" feature, which lists the 20 most recent comments. Next down are the Weekly Archives. Under that, you'll find a list of the 20 most recent entries. And finally, below that you'll find the Technorati link, the Creative Commons license link, and other such fun.
STILL BROKEN: (Weds? If you want to try and figure this out while I'm asleep and you're awake in the morning, I will be your best friend, I swear.) The Individual Archives (when you click to add comments or whatever) choke on the sidebar. Now, the sidebar is just Snarky, on those pages, but I think it actually looks better (and would look more consistent when navigating here from the front page) if it, you know, actually has a Sidebar on these pages. So... um... yeah. Totally be your best friend.
Night, everyone.

You can do a lot of damage by mucking about in those Movable Type templates. Fortunately it's all fairly easy to fix, once you understand the tags.
And breaking everything is a great way to learn what they do!

I did the best damage possible -- I accidentally overwrote my Main Index template with the stylesheet.
So yeah. The changes to the Main Index (like the graphic and all the links to bits and pieces in the system) were all redone... well, last night. (I was fortunately able to get a cached copy that had the primary link information. It of course didn't have the MT provided sidebar info, but that was easy enough to recreate.)

Like others, I didn't see the new style till I hit refresh. That isn't going to happen every time we come to the site, is it? Maybe I'll go away and come back, and see.
Also, I'll take this opportunity to restate my request that comments be made searchable. Wednesday seemed to think it a worthwhile innovation and doable, perhaps, when I asked before.

Is it just me, or is anyone else finding the dark line separating comment from commentee (or post from poster/comments link on the main page) slightly confusing?
Things are being grouped visually that shouldn't be grouped.

Admittedly, it would be easier to have the line breaks differently, after the poster's name instead of after the post. It does look like the name at the top is the poster, not the previous poster.

While you're repairing damage from ground up, would it be possible to have commenter names above their comments, rather than after? When it's a long thread, I tend to cherrypick comments by people I know have interesting things to say, which requires a lot of back and forth when the name isn't on the same page as the start of the comment.

Kludge and Dave: how's this for service? Work better?

Anyone care to bet on how long before Eric gets fed up with us?
On that note, any chance we could get the line back? It cut the comments up really nicely. Just wondering, because 'design by committee' is always such a great way to get good designs. :)

I don't know. I'm thinking it looks good enough as it is right now. The line was indeed nice, but that just might cause some confusion again about where the post divisions fall.
Comment from: Eric Burns posted at August 24, 2005 1:17 PM
Putting the line in would necessitate an actual Stylesheet change (we just took out the "posted" class for this section), and I'm not really sure it's needed.

Yay!

I think the line would still be useful. This version is better - it's not actively misleading - but it's still a bit confusing. Anyhoo, I'll stop complaining now. I can always complain to Wednesday's face later on, give her the chance to hit back. ;)
I quite like the fact that you're trying out [e] and eric: on the main page, though. That's much less confusing, and I quite egalitarian.

Kludge: does this mean you're actually coming over tonight?
I'm thinking line is the way to go, myself, but yesterday there was just too much AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. AAA, AAAAA aAAaaaAAaaa, Aaaa, and, of course, asieoniezi.

Liking the new look. It would be nice to have something separating the comments. Now, it can be hard to tell who says what unless you already know the names are above the post. Also, I can't type while lying on my side, but that's neither here nor there.

hey, new poster . . .
i like the new look, i just have one comment - on the front page where the snarks are? it looks like the post time and date and person are connected to the snark below - i guess like they were saying with the comments earlier.
i agree that there needs to be something dividing the comments, it looks to . . . clumped? otherwise. if you would have to change the stylesheet to do one or the other, i guess that means it would be easier to do both, right?

1) I like the new look. Very clean.
2) I like that the names list by the posts.
3) Could you change the name tags in the RSS feed so that they don't take up as much space? Perhaps just an "EB" and "WW" instead of the full "Eric Burns:" that is there now? My newsreader is just a Firefox Plugin sidebar and right now the name takes up a third of the sidebar space that it uses. Cuts off a lot of the title. Just, you-know, saying is all.
4) Um... keep up the good work. :-P

Not that it matters.. but..
Pretty. I like all the blues. I know everybody is having line-dreams, but it's cool as it is. It just is different, and some.. well, bleh. nevermind.
Suffice to say, after about 30 seconds of "holy CRAP what happened to websnark," and then another 30 seconds of "oh, look! There's the Snarkysaurus on the comments page," I'm used to it now, and just as happy as before. More so, cause look! There's the Snarkysaurus again. too cute.
