After a suggestion from Matt "Action" Sweeney, and some cajoling of broken bits which the good people at Six Apart helped us resolve, we now have some sidebar changes. If you scroll down below the categories list, you'll now see A) that we've gotten rid of the superfluous "Calendar" function (seriously, did anyone ever use it? Ever?"), B) stripped back the Recent Entries list to the last 20, and C) added a Recent Comments listing below the categories, so you can easily keep track of new comments as they're posted and people can actually get their names on the front page if they want.
Below the Recent Comments, we still have the weekly listings, which some people truly love to use, what since it gives you a full listing of entries for a given week, for folks who've been away and want to get caught up.
And, we've bumped up the "days displayed" back to our traditional 7 days. We'll see if it so badly hits bandwidth that we need to restrict it back again.
Enjoy, all!
It's funny when I look up an old article on Sin City you did (saw the movie finally and it is teh great), come back to the main page, hit refresh to see if anything happened, and come to find the entire site design changed.
Not that it looks bad. It just looks different. Wonder how long it'll take for me to get used to it.
Woah, layout change. I like it.
I'm trying to figure out how to move the sidebar back to the left hand side. Weds is going to look at it tomorrow, too. But somewhere in the stylesheet it should define it. And I will find that somewhere!
At first I thought the sidebar was gone all the way. Hope you can fix the sidebar soon. The layout looks good too.
Personally, I like the sidebar on the right side, puts more emphises on the actual snarks and looks cleaner (to me at least).
I second keeping the sidebar on the right. It just feels more...Websnarkish that way. Sadly, I missed the temporary switch to a new layout before things went blooey and back to the default, so I'll have to wait til morning before offering any comments on the new design.
ANT -- this is the new stylesheet. We got the bar moved. And then I messed up the main index. So colors and text and everything? That's all the way it's supposed to be. But the "You Had Me And You Lost Me" sections et al? That'll take a bit of time to restore.
Though I've got most basic functions back on the sidebar. (Between freaking about my broken site and the WHISTLING FROM HELL) I had to take the time to fix the stuff.

*cough*
I got mentioned in a post! And I got a nickname! And you spelled my name right! (a lot of people miss the third 'e' in Sweeney). I feel all warm and fuzzy inside now. Or may be that's just the coffee.
The discussion is probably over, but I also agree that the side bar should be on the right, and not just for looks. When you web surf on a mobile device that has a small screen, the browser will cut up the screen in an attempt to resize it. If there's a sidebar on the right, then people have to scroll through that before they get to the content. It used to bug the hell out of me reading Boing Boing on my sidekick because of this.
