Eric: Also? No Bun Bun. And that's just for the best.

I mentioned this a couple of days ago, but let me make it more explicit -- I'm getting back into a groove with Sluggy Freelance. I don't know if Abrams has been finding his Funny or if my brain has adjusted, but I'm enjoying it. There's still bits I wish hadn't happened the way they did -- most centrally, Torg's depression and guilt melting into nothing -- but I have to admit that steam set irons as cooking tools and high speed babysitting are funny, and that's enough, Pig. That's enough.

That's "That'll do, Pig."
(...once again showing that I have entirely too much space in my head devoted to cute little talking animal minutiae.)

I really think Tuesday's colour comic would have been a better candidate for snarking. I actually went back to the strip two or three times during the day, and laughed out loud each time.
Pete has certainly found his Funny once more. And being a relatively new Sluggy reader (only for little more than year), I can say by going through the archives that Pete's always been like that, going through highs and lows. The faithful are, once again, rewarded.
I still can't understand the hatred for Bun-bun, though, Eric :-) Sure, he's a slightly formulaic 'badass' + 'cute animal' character, but it's not like he hasn't been owned a few times. And I loved 'Holiday Wars'.

You know, the more I think about it, the more it occurs to me that Torg's "depression and guilt melting into nothing" could be realistic. Torg's struck me as the sort of person who follows the dictates of that old song...you know, the one that goes "Don't cry out loud / Just keep it inside, learn how to hide your feelings". His friends sort of rely on him to be the always-cheerful goofy type, and react badly when he isn't (viz Zoe's anguished confiding in Min a few weeks back), and not wanting to disappoint them, he hides his depression so nobody can see it and goes on with his life.
Of course, it's not natural to do that, and people who do tend to crack sooner or later. I kind of hope this is where Pete's going with it; it could provide some nice drama down the road (if he manages to avoid first-and-tenning it).

I think my problem with Torg's depression disappearance isn't so much whether it's a way I could see Torg doing dealing with it so much as the fact that prior to Oceans Unmoving there was no indication that that was the way Torg was handling it, and quite a few indicators that Torg was going to deal with things in an entirely different way. Yes, it's good to get the "old Torg" back, but while in real time it was 3 months between Torg strips, in strip time it wasn't even a day between "I'm all messed up about what happened while I was gone, so I'm leaving to do some things, but I'll stick around long enough to help save the house" and "Oh, we got kicked out but it's okay because we have a PSPuny, and hey, we can crash with Min and do the goofy things we used to do".
I'll agree that Sluggy is bringing the funny more consistently again. In Eric's more recent terms, to regain his control over execution and plotline pacing, I think Pete's at least temporarily sacrificing story arc pacing. Maybe it was necessary. A lot of things can be retconned in story arc terms. In that sense this is probably a better approach than continuing down a path that keep the story arc consistent but sacrifices a lot of the humor and feel of the strip that keeps people reading it.

We've seen how Torg reacts to major shocks; he turns into Torgo of the Jungle.
