Eric: A quick screenshot of the fullscreen bits from Ulysses

Here's a quick screenshot of the fullscreen editing mode of Ulysses, talked about in my last snark. I set the font myself (I like the heavier look of it), and naturally I did the actual typing bits as part of a story. But literally, that's all there is to it. You type and the letters appear. No desktop, no other windows, no nothing. Just you and your words.

It reminds me, in a lot of ways, of WordPerfect/DOS. I'd always change the backgrounds off that silly blue to the original black. And there was something I always liked about the amber text screens of old CRT terminals.

Anyway, it works nicely for me. So, sometime before the end of the next thirty days, I really need to track down sixty-something odd bucks to drop on this thing.

I had a word processor program just like that for my C64.. I can't say I'd ever go back to it. :) Typically I use notepad and if I need something spiffy I use wordpad. I'm a simple kind of gal. ^_^

I don't write hardly anything but web pages (or Usenet posts), and I believe in easy-loading pages so I handcode with HTML that probably all already existed in 1996 when I learned most of it. Except at work where they make me use Office, I write in the MS-DOS text editor.

Wow, that's old school all right. If you enjoy Ulysses, I can loan you a copy of Tablet and Chisel V1.0. ;)

I do most of my creative writing and all of my webpage maint in emacs (which I had a friend write an .emacs file for that reduces it to acting more like a simple editor I used in the early 90s called FSE). And I read most of my email in elm. Wheee!

I use RoughDraft when I'm writing. No silly lines under words during auto spellcheck, no irritating indentation tools, and a distinct lack of zillions of formatting options. If I put more than three --- together, it will STAY that three ---.

And it can be attached to a thesarus, and it has a word count feature, and it has a notepad in a little sidebar. :) I believe it can also be set up for the window to be amber on black, although not full-screen excluding all else.

And it's free. I like the free part.

It's beautiful.

And with Opera's fullscreen mode turned on, it's just... perfect looking.

Now if only I had a Mac-based computer. That looks so nice...

Meh. But I'm one of the weird ones who actually compose in Quark and InDesign. I find Word and the ilk way too limiting.

And of course some vi/vim for scripting. Or SubEthaEdit on the Mac....

Just a reminder to the Windows users, in case you haven't been paying attention, the Mac Mini's only $500. :)

I love how mac users keep using the word "only" in front of $500.. :P I use Linux for everything I would use a Mac for, I'm a happy camper with a Linux laptop and a Windows desktop.

But.. emacs and elm? Yeesh, at least go with Joe and Pine.. save yourself some headaches. :)

-Shady.

Pine gives me headaches, I prefer the simplicity of elm. I have an account I stopped using largely because they upgraded and dumped elm, forcing me to use pine on that system.

Hmm, should I spend $500 on a Mac Mini or should I save said amount of money to give me half of a chance of going to college next semester without going flat broke...?

I've always seen the different between ELM and PINE like the difference between a fountain pen and a ballpoint.. but I guess I can be wrong again, it's a new day after all ^_^

Believe you me, I will be dancing in the streets if/when the price comes down lower than that. But considering the number of people who say to me, "Well, I'd buy a mac if they didn't cost $2,000...." I figured maybe some folks out there didn't know they're not all that expensive any more.

College - always :) Once you get there, using a computer's free!

I remember Pine - we used that in undergrad to check our email. I liked it - very light and efficient compared to the VAX system we used before that. Very easy on the eyes, too, since we were all at dumb terminals that looked a lot like Eric's screenshot above.
