Eric: The Daily Comics Trawl: The Daily Grind Ironman Competition

I really like the idea of the Daily Grind Challenge. I've talked about it in previous snarks. And I'm glad to see some of the big guns come into the competition -- people who haven't missed an update in years. People who haven't ever missed an update.

But the question has come up -- what about the newcomer? The people who were doing this to begin to build notice? The people who were doing this to motivate themselves? Chris Crosby is a posting machine. How do we compete?

All right. I don't want to overestimate my own importance, but I'm doing my part.

I am going to read every Daily Grind strip, every day. I won't promise to snark any given strip, but I'm going to read them and let them enter my daily consciousness. I've set up two sets of Safari Tabs (well, Firefox Tabs, but I don't want to change the Lexicon) for this, and I'm going to post this as a Daily Trawl.

The day a given strip misses, all bets are off. If they've managed to grab my attention -- or I just plain like them -- they'll move into the regular trawls and I'll keep up with it. If they don't, I won't. But so long as they stay on the daily posts, I'll be reading them and where appropriate making comments.

One necessary exception -- it's not particularly easy to offend me. I read FLEM and laugh myself sick. If you manage to do it, however, I reserve the right to not read your strip any more. I'm not saying you need to show actual skill or humor or anything. But I won't squick myself daily just because.

(And for the record, actually showing skill and humor is probably the best method to get me to keep, y'know, reading your strip after you drop. And also the best method for keeping me sane during this. If, y'know, either of those are important to you. They're not important to some, of course.)

The people who are doing this are seriously cool. This competition could go years, with the lineup we currently have. I want as many people as possible keeping up with it as long as possible. For those who are new to writing and drawing, I look forward to watching your skills improve. For old favorites, I'm always glad to keep up with you.

(Note -- some strips, like Superosity and PvP, appear in more than one Trawl now. They'll continue to do so after the long promised updating of the Trawls happens. That, as they say, is life.)

Happy drawing, gang.

Man, seeing the final list it's a pity Irregular Webcomic isn't in the running. I mean, I'd love to see it come down to Chris Crosby and David Morgan-Mar in 2015...

How in the world am I going to keep up with that many comics... :s

Looks like Breeden is in trouble right out of the gate. Her strip isn't updating on its regular space, even though she has it up on the DrunkDuck backup. Do the rules say it has to always go up at the usual place?

I think a certain level of "oh crap, Keenspace broke" exemptions need to be expected. Breeden actually did her part.

This would be a perfect spot for me to once again promote www.comic-nation.com, with which you can keep track of comic updates. However, most of them aren't already there and I can't see an easy way to track the updates of quite a few of them. That doesn't mean I wouldn't if someone used the handy dandy feedback form...

Hey man, would you mind changing the title of my comic, to "Fatty". Cause the website is Amazing Amoeba, and it's run by three people, the webcomic is just mine. Thanks.

You deserve the prize money if you keep up with this.

Anyone started a deadpool yet? I'm betting three quatloos on Dean Trippe getting disqualified first because of the judges running out of patience with the slow web server....

I'd like to see a version of this that requires all the authors to have an RSS feed. That'd make keeping up to date a little easier. :)

Well, Kurtz just blew it. First, he uploaded a strip with a date of February 29, in a non-leap year, and now, there's no strip for March 2.

Way to go!

Comment from: Chris Anthony posted at March 2, 2005 7:07 AM

Hazelip, I'm not sure how posting a strip with the wrong date has anything to do with the Iron Man contest (especially since, as far as I can tell, it's already been corrected), and he has until midnight tonight to post his March 2 strip. How, exactly, has Kurtz "blown it"?

Comment from: Ray Radlein posted at March 2, 2005 3:54 PM

I sent him an email joking that he was obviously trying to lose now, unless he had done it as part of a sneaky plan to shift the odds before making a killing off of side bets. :-)

Comment from: Hazelip posted at March 2, 2005 6:15 PM

I thought it was midnight of the previous night? Friday's strip is posted Thrusday before midnight so that all day Friday's strip is up and readable.

That's incorrect?

Comment from: larksilver posted at March 2, 2005 6:56 PM

According to the news post on pvponline.com, he has until 11:59 PM of a given day to post that day's comic. He even says in that news item that he originally thought that it was a matter of posting at midnight of, say, Thursday, or Thursday's comic would be late. Apparently, one of the referees e-mailed him and told him he had until midnight. So... sounds to me like he's not late.

And the whole 2/29/05 thing? Freakin' hilarious, and so totally something I would (wait, I DID) do. Hardly contest-losing material, that, since he still fixed it on the right day. Friggin' February. Friggin' non-Leap Years. bah!

Comment from: Hazelip posted at March 2, 2005 9:04 PM

Oh, okay. I stand corrected, then.

Thanks.

Comment from: Mathron posted at March 2, 2005 9:51 PM

It is certainly true that Kurtz did not fail the challenge itself, as by the rules he has the entire day to get the comic up.

He does seem to have failed his own personal goal of being on time every weekday - or at least, I assume so. I don't actually know what he considers on time.

I suspect he won't have any problem with the basic challenge. And, hopefully, the fact that he hasn't achieved his personal goal yet will only be all the more incentive for him to keep trying. That's one of the things at the heart of this entire endeavor - not just meeting some arbitrary guidelines, but personal challenge and progress.

That typo's going to haunt me the rest of my webcomicking life, isn't it? For the record, my last name is Rothery. No B.
